Van Foreest resists world champion Carlsen in Wijk aan Zee
6.50 pm: Jorden van Foreest has played a great draw against world champion Magnus Carlsen in the fourth round of the international chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee. The Dutch defending champion was able to withstand the Norwegian number 1 in the world with the black pieces. After 39 moves, both grandmasters agreed to split the point.
Earlier in the day, Anish Giri also came to a draw against Russian Sergej Karjakin.
Van Foreest and Carlsen share second place with three other chess players with 2.5 points from four games. Santosh Gujrathi Vidit from India, who drew with the Russian Andrej Esipenko is the leader with 3 points. Giri, who lost to Carlsen on Sunday, is joint ninth with 1.5 points.
Van Boekel video referee at World Cup for club teams
6.03 pm: Pol van Boekel is the only representative of the Dutch referee corps at the World Cup for club teams in the United Arab Emirates (3-12 February). He is one of the seven video arbitrators at the tournament.
Frenchman Clément Turpin and his two assistants Nicolas Danos and Cyril Gringore form the leading trio on behalf of the European football union UEFA at the World Cup. The other four major confederations also send out three that can be used for the World Cup matches.
On behalf of Europe, Chelsea is participating in the World Cup tournament as the winner of the Champions League.
Three handball players infected at European Championship, team can play against Portugal
6.02 pm: Three handball players from the Dutch team were infected with the corona virus at the European Championship in Hungary and were separated from the team. The other players tested negative and can play in Budapest on Tuesday evening for the third and final group match against Portugal. With a win, the Orange is sure of a sequel to the tournament in the main round.
During the test round on Monday there were positive results for internationals Robin Schoenaker, Jeffrey Boomhouwer and Florent Bourget. The trio shows no symptoms of illness, but has been placed in isolation according to the rules.
National coach Erlingur Richardsson cannot so quickly call up replacements for the game with Portugal, which starts at 8.30 pm. He did, however, add the traveled reserve Niko Blaauw to the match selection. Orange has fifteen players available against the Portuguese.
Corana infections have already disrupted the preparation of the handball players for the European Championship. Ephrahim Jerry and Alec Smit tested positive and missed the last practice matches. Smit recovered in time and was able to join the team to the final round.
Bourget also tested positive on January 10 after returning from the last practice internship in Sweden and had to stay behind in the Netherlands. He therefore missed the first two games against Hungary (31-28) and Iceland (28-29). He tested negative on Sunday and then traveled to Hungary. On arrival in Budapest, he got a positive result again in the next test.
“The players who are now positive can only join the team again if they have been tested negative,” says a spokeswoman for the handball association NHV. “The national coach does have options to call up new players in the event of many infections, but whether that is necessary, of course, depends on the outcome against Portugal. We have to qualify for the main round first.”
Dammer Boomstra in Eindhoven close to third world title
5.16 pm: Dammer Roel Boomstra is close to his third world title in the match against the Russian Aleksandr Schwartzman. The eleventh round in Eindhoven ended in a draw. This put the score at 14-10 in favor of the home player, who so far had registered two victories against zero for the title holder.
Boomstra needs one more victory to secure the overall victory in the World Cup battle. The twelfth and final round of play is scheduled for Wednesday. In the event of a draw or defeat by Boomstra, a tiebreak will follow on Thursday. In this too, the 28-year-old Dutchman only needs one win to dethrone the 54-year-old Russian. In any case, three wins are needed for the world title.

Olympia’s Tour in March in the repechage with start in Hardenberg
4:49 PM: The organization of cycling round Olympia’s Tour is counting on the oldest stage race in the Netherlands to continue in March 2022. The previous two editions had to be removed from the calendar due to the corona restrictions in force at the time. “We expect more space for the sport this spring,” said the organization.
Olympia’s Tour lasts from 17 to 20 March and starts in Hardenberg, Overijssel. On the opening day, two stages are planned for the elite and promising riders. First there is a team time trial of 10.4 kilometers and later in the day a stage around Hardenberg with a length of 77 kilometers.
The cycling round has traditionally been a stage race in which talents can put themselves in the spotlight with professional teams. The honors list includes the names of Lars Boom, Cees Bol, Julius Johansen, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Dylan van Baarle. Sander de Pestel (now a professional at Topsport Vlaanderen) was the last winner in 2019. The organization expects to be able to announce the entire stage schedule of Olympia’s Tour in the short term.
Smooth chess draw Giri against Karjakin in Wijk aan Zee
4.05 pm: Chess player Anish Giri has played his third draw in the fourth round of Tata Steel Chess. The Dutch number 7 in the world ranking and the Russian Sergej Karjakin decided to share the point after fourteen moves. For Karjakin, the number 18 in the world, it was also his third draw. Giri is still waiting for his first victory in the international chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee. He lost to world champion Magnus Carlsen on Sunday.
Giri (27) has been part of the grandmasters in Wijk aan Zee since 2011 and is still looking for his first overall victory in the Dutch tournament, which is also called the ‘Wimbledon of chess’. He was close twice, but both times he lost the tiebreak. Last year that happened against compatriot Jorden van Foreest.
Defending champion Van Foreest will play in the fourth round with black against Carlsen, who is a seven-time winner of Tata Steel Chess, on Tuesday.
Tennis players play a home game against Spain in Den Bosch
13.29 o’clock: The Dutch tennis players play the qualifying round for the Billie Jean King Cup against Spain in April in Den Bosch. Gravel has been chosen as the surface in the Maaspoort, reports tennis association KNLTB.
“The Maaspoort is a beautiful location with an intimate atmosphere. AZ also misses Martins Indi in cup match against FC Twente
1.13 pm: AZ cannot have Bruno Martins Indi at its disposal on Wednesday in the away match against FC Twente, in the eighth finals of the cup tournament. Due to corona canceled Excelsior – ADO duel next Tuesday
11:38 am: The canceled match between Excelsior and ADO Den Haag in the Kitchen Champion Division due to the high number of corona infections will be made up for next Tuesday, January 25 at 8 p.m. The number two and five of the first division would actually face each other last weekend. The Rotterdammers then had too few players to play due to a corona outbreak.

Coronavirus is hindering Bolivia in the run-up to World Cup qualification
07.59 o’clock: Bolivia is experiencing a restless run-up to the upcoming qualifying matches for next week’s World Cup.
