UEFA: no decision yet on European Championship participation Russian football players
5:08 PM: The European football association UEFA has still not made a decision on the participation of the Russian football players in next summer’s European Championship in England. UEFA has suspended Russia from all international football tournaments because of the war in Ukraine. “The matter is before the international sports tribunal CAS,” said chairman Aleksander Ceferin after a board meeting in Nyon. “This topic was not on our agenda right now. We expect to receive more information in the short term, because we also know that the European Championship is soon.”
At the European Championship, Russia is classified in the group of Dutch football players. The mutual duel is scheduled for July 13, but everything points to Russia not being allowed to participate in the European Championship.
The Russian Football Association had appealed the suspension to the CAS, but the international sports tribunal ruled a few weeks ago that both UEFA and the FIFA global federation’s measures remain in force.
Italian rider Longo Borghini skips Amstel Gold Race
3:45 PM: Italian cyclist Elisa Longo Borghini has withdrawn from the Amstel Gold Race. According to her team Trek-Segafredo, she has not yet recovered sufficiently from a cold.
The 30-year-old Longo Borghini would be one of the leaders of Trek-Segafredo on Sunday, the team of Lucinda Brand and Ellen van Dijk, among others. The experienced Italian finished eighth last year.
Last year, the Women’s Gold Race was won by Marianne Vos.
Former Chancellor Schröder leaves Hanover for ties with Putin
13:53: Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is no longer a member of Hannover 96. He has withdrawn at the request of the football club. Schröder has been the subject of much controversy in recent weeks because of his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Hannover 96, which plays in the second Bundesliga, had already announced that it wanted to expel 78-year-old Schröder from the club for not speaking out clearly against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The former chancellor also came under pressure because of his top position at the Russian state energy company Rosneft.
Earlier, the German Football Association DFB and Borussia Dortmund had revoked Schröder’s honorary membership due to his close ties to the Russians.
Quick-Step with debutant Asgreen in Amstel Gold Race
13:05: Danish cyclist Kasper Asgreen will make his debut in the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday. The 27-year-old Dane, last year’s winner of the Tour of Flanders, leads the Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team for the Limburg hill classic over more than 250 kilometers. Asgreen was unable to participate in the Tour of Flanders last week for the win.
Mathieu van der Poel succeeded the Dane on the honors list of the cycling monument. Asgreen crossed the finish line in 23rd in Oudenaarde, more than a minute after the Dutchman who already won ‘Flanders’ in 2020. Van der Poel will also be at the start of the Gold Race in Maastricht on Sunday. He wrote the Dutch classic three years ago to his name.
Asgreen, who will also ride Paris-Roubaix next week, will receive support in the Limburg hills from Zdenek Stybar, Davide Ballerini and Florian Sénéchal, among others. The riders of Quick-Step have booked eighteen victories this season, six of which via the Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen
Berrettini skips Roland Garros after operation
12.38 pm: The Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini, the number 6 in the world, skips almost all preparation tournaments at Roland Garros. Berrettini, 25, underwent minor surgery on his right hand last week. The Italian has therefore withdrawn from the clay tournaments of Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome. He reached the final in Madrid last year.
“It was a difficult decision to unsubscribe from these tournaments, especially the one in Rome,” Berrettini wrote on Instagram. “However, it is the right decision to make sure that I can fight for the prizes at the highest level for many years to come. On the advice of the doctors, I have decided not to put any time pressure on my recovery process.”
Berrettini reached the semifinals of the Australian Open at the beginning of this year, in which he lost to Rafael Nadal. The Italian reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and the final of Wimbledon last season. Both times he lost to Novak Djokovic. The grand slam tournament on the clay in Paris starts on May 22.
Captain Jansen will also play football at FC Twente next season
10:57 am: Football player Renate Jansen will also play for FC Twente next season. The captain had an expiring contract with the champion of the Women’s Eredivisie, but the club has lifted the option of extension. Jansen (31) is now stuck in Enschede until the summer of 2023.
The attacker has been playing for FC Twente since 2015. Jansen won three national titles with the club that is now again at the top of the Women’s Eredivisie. The captain was voted the best player of the competition last year.
The 51-time international (four goals) was part of the Orange selection that won the European Championship in his own country in 2017 and reached the World Cup final two years later. Jansen is now missing from the selection of national coach Mark Parsons for the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus and the friendly against South Africa.
Two more defeats for curling men at the World Cup in Las Vegas
09:42 o’clock: The Dutch curling men have little to contribute to the World Cup in Las Vegas. The team of skip Wouter Gösgens now stands at seven defeats against one victory. The Orange squad also lost its last two games. The United States were too strong 8-3 and the Czech Republic won 11-5. The Dutch team shares the last place with Denmark after eight rounds.
Thirteen countries participate in the World Cup. The two highest ranked teams from the group stage go straight to the semi-finals. The numbers 3 to 6 will play in a qualifying match for the other two semi-final places.
The curlers are participating in the World Cup for the fifth time. In the previous four editions, with Jaap van Dorp as skip, the Dutch men finished eleventh (in 2017), tenth (in 2018 and 2019) and twelfth (in 2021).
Durant guides Nets in city derby past Knicks
08:56 a.m.: Kevin Durant was the star of the Brooklyn Nets basketball players, beating city rivals New York Knicks 110-98 in the American NBA. Durant recorded 32 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists for his team who managed to make up for a 21-point deficit. Kyrie Irving added 24 points to the score of the Nets, who are not yet certain of a place in the playoffs and will first come out in the jump-offs.
Vedette Durant was not happy with the Nets’ playing. “It’s risky, I hate being that team that has to fight back in the game,” Durant said. “But that situation can come and for us it’s about continuing to support each other regardless of the score. We had the good spirit in the second half.”
Brouwer convincing to third round Houston
07:32 am: The Dutch tennis player Gijs Brouwer has surprisingly easily won his second match on the ATP Tour. He defeated American JJ Wolf in two sets in Houston and awarded his opponent two games: 6-1 6-1. In his first match ever on the ATP Tour, the 26-year-old Brouwer, who was born in the Texan city, had beaten the much more highly regarded Spaniard Feliciano López.
Brouwer comes from the qualifications. He is the number 361 in the world and therefore the lowest ranked player in the world ranking who is still in the Houston tournament. He will meet American Reilly Opelka, the number 18 in the world, in the third round.
Brouwer is normally mainly active in challengers and futures tournaments, the lowest category of international tennis. In the summer of 2020 he became Dutch champion.
