Chess player Doebov back in Tata Steel Chess after refusing a mouth cap
3.15 pm: Chess player Daniil Doebov is back in Tata Steel Chess. The Russian grandmaster tested negative for corona on Sunday morning and will sit down again in Wijk aan Zee. He plays in the eighth round against the Pole Jan-Krzysztof Duda.
Doebov was missing in the seventh round on Saturday because he refused to play with a face mask. Someone from the Russian’s close environment was infected and for that reason the tournament management had asked him to take a seat behind the chessboard with a mouth cap to protect his Dutch opponent Anish Giri.
Doebov refused on principle and pointed out that before the start of the tournament, the chess players had been informed that a mouth cap was not mandatory while playing. The tournament management indicated that they can take necessary measures in unexpected situations. Since Dubov did not show up, Giri was declared the winner by regulation.
Football players FC Twente beat PSV and take the lead
2:25 pm: The football players of FC Twente have taken the lead in the Eredivisie Women. The defending champion defeated PSV 3-1 at Sportcampus Diekman in Enschede. FC Twente thus came to 30 points, 2 points more than Ajax, which was unable to play against sc Heerenveen due to a number of corona cases within the selection this weekend.
Fenna Kalma opened the score shortly before half-time with a curious goal. The 22-year-old striker hit hard and high from an indirect free kick 5 meters from the goal, after PSV goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal had grabbed a back pass in her hands.
Desiree van Lunteren scored the equalizer halfway through the second half from a penalty kick, but a minute later Twente took the lead again via Anna-Lena Stolze. The German set up the attack himself and shot well from a distance with the left. Kalma decided the game moments later with her 22nd goal of the season.
As number 3 in the ranking, PSV is now 4 points behind FC Twente.
German ski jumpers to Beijing without two Olympic champions
12:28 pm German ski jumpers Severin Freund and Andreas Wellinger are missing from the Olympics next month. The two Olympic champions have not been given a place in the selection for Beijing. Freund (33) struggled with his form after two serious knee injuries, Wellinger (26) missed the World Cup match in Titisee-Neustadt this weekend due to a corona infection.
Freund and Wellinger were part of the German team that won gold in the Nations Cup at the Sochi 2014 Winter Games. Wellinger became Olympic champion on the small ramp four years later in Pyeongchang. On the big jump he took silver behind the Pole Kamil Stoch and in the Nations Cup there was also silver for the German ski jumpers.
Wellinger hoped to get a place in the team with good results in Titisee-Neustadt, but a positive corona test prevented that. The German national coach thinks the risk is too great that Wellinger will have to quarantine in Beijing and therefore kept the two-time Olympic champion out of his team.
The German team for the Games consists of ski jumpers Karl Geiger, Markus Eisenbichler, Stephan Leyhe, Constantin Schmid and Pius Paschke.
René Meulensteen briefly national coach of Australia
10:00 a.m. The Dutch trainer René Meulensteen is currently in charge of the national football team of Australia. Meulensteen will take over from national coach Graham Arnold, who has tested positive for the corona virus and will be in isolation for the next few days. The 57-year-old from Brabant will prepare Australia for Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Vietnam.
Meulensteen has been Arnold’s assistant at the ‘Socceroos’ since 2018. Alex Ferguson’s former assistant at Manchester United was previously head coach of Fulham and Maccabi Haifa, among others.
According to the Australian Football Association, Arnold, former player of Roda JC and NAC Breda, among others, has been fully vaccinated and he also had a booster shot ten days ago. Although the national coach has no corona-related complaints, he still tested positive. Meulensteen and Tony Vidmar, Arnold’s other assistant, will prepare the Australians for the duel with Vietnam in the World Cup qualifier.

Belgian Van Uytvanck tests positive before leaving Australia
07:50 am Belgian tennis star Alison Van Uytvanck cannot leave Australia for the time being. The number 55 in the world tested positive for the corona virus just before her return trip to Belgium. “I am now in isolation and follow all requirements,” the 27-year-old Belgian writes on Instagram. “I have very mild symptoms and am looking forward to coming back stronger.”
Van Uytvanck was eliminated in the second round of the singles by the Chinese Qiang Wang. She also stranded on Thursday with the Danish Clara Tauson in the second round of the doubles. Van Uytvanck wanted to fly back to Belgium on Sunday, but the mandatory PCR test before departure yielded a positive result.
Australia has strict rules for participants in the Australian Open. In principle, only vaccinated tennis players are allowed to participate. A lot of players criticized last week what they believe to be a flawed test protocol during the tournament.
