Buying a mobile home is still a trend
The trend towards mobile homes is not abating, the corona pandemic recently strengthened the trend. There are many Germans who want to tour Germany or even Europe with a camper van. However, for enthusiastic mobile home users or those who want to become one, the question arises whether they should buy a mobile home especially for this purpose or rent it for the required time.
Buying vs. renting – how much does it cost?
After all, the purchase of a motorhome can be expensive. ADAC-run camping website PiNCAMP reports that a basic model is available from some retailers for €30,000. There are also insurance, TÜV, approval, special equipment and furnishings such as plates, pots and cutlery. According to PiNCAMP, used motorhomes are a little cheaper, ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 euros. Here, however, buyers will most likely face higher repair costs over time.
Travelers should calculate between 90 and 140 euros per day for renting a mobile home, reports the camping blog Outdoorkid.
When is the purchase of a mobile home worthwhile financially?
Martin Zöllner from the ADAC gave the Frankfurter Rundschau the following rule of thumb: In order for the purchase of a mobile home to be financially profitable, buyers would have to be on the road for at least six weeks a year. Almost every holiday would have to be spent in a mobile home or many weekend trips planned in order to come up with this number of weeks. However, Zöllner emphasizes that buyers are not always concerned with finances: “But for many campers, profitability is irrelevant.” The hobby and mobility are other things that play a major role in the purchase decision. Others, on the other hand, convert the mobile home according to their individual ideas and needs.
Jost Krüger from the CIVD also reports to the Frankfurter Rundschau that a mobile home is designed for long-term use. If you don’t want to commit yourself and don’t have a precise holiday plan for the next few years, you can also rent a mobile home. In any case, before buying one of your own, it doesn’t hurt to take a trip in a rented campervan first to see if this type of vacation appeals to you.
