After three titles at the individual distance world championships in February, miracle runner Jordan Stolz also wants the prestigious all-around title. After day one on Saturday (March 9, 2024), the American is fully on track.
With first place in the 500 meters (34.10 seconds) and seventh place in the 5,000 meters (6:14.76 minutes), Stolz moved to the top of the intermediate rankings in Inzell, Bavaria. With his 71.576 points he leads Patrick Roest from the Netherlands (72.715) and the Norwegian team pursuit Olympic champion Sverre Lunde Pedersen (73.693).
The only German starter Felix Maly from Erfurt is in 18th position (76.234). He came 20th over the 500 meters (37.48 seconds), and his 6:27.54 minutes over the 5,000 meters were good enough for 17th place. The decision will be made on Sunday (March 10, 2024) with the 1,500 and 10,000 races meters.
Women: Two Dutch women in front
In the women’s competition, Marijke Groenewoud from the Netherlands (78.296) leads ahead of her compatriot Joy Beune (78.456). The Japanese Miho Takagi (78.461) took third place after the 500 and 1,500 meter races.
With Josephine Schlörb there is only one German starter in the women’s category. She was actually only intended as a reserve runner, but was ultimately used because the originally planned Lea Sophie Scholz had knee problems after a fall on Thursday (March 7th, 2024). Schlörb is 20th at halftime (83.648).
Sprint titles went to China and Japan
The decisions in the sprints had already been made on Thursday and Friday. In the men’s event, China’s Ning Zhongyan won ahead of Jenning de Boo from the Netherlands and Canadian Olympic silver medalist Laurent Dubreuil. In the women’s event, Miho Takagi from Japan won the gold medal ahead of the two Dutch women Femke Kok and Jutta Leerdam.
