After Finn Sonnekalb’s world-class results with a German record over 1,000 meters and a junior world record over 1,500 meters, the German speed skaters also set further signs of respect at the end of the World Cup in the USA.
Felix Maly crowned a strong weekend for the German team at the World Cup in Salt Lake City with second place. At the mass start on Sunday (11/16/2025 / local time), Maly only had to admit defeat to veteran Jorrit Bergsma after a very clever tactical race.
Fridtjolf Petzold completed the impressive German record with sixth place. This means Maly and Petzold have good chances for an Olympic ticket in the mass start.
German women fourth in the Team tracking
The Germans had previously impressed in the teams. The women underlined their claim to a medal spot with a very compact performance in the team pursuit. In fourth place, they remained ahead of the successful Dutch women. The German trio with Josefine Schlörb, Josie Hofmann and Lea Scholz were just four tenths of a second short of the podium.
German record in Men’s persecution
The German men could also recommend themselves. The trio Patrick Beckert, Felix Maly and Fridtjof Petzold won the B group of the team pursuit with a German record of 3:39.17 minutes.
Sonnekalb with two records and a podium
Overall, the German Speed Skating Association team performed stronger at the start of the Olympic season than they have in years. On Friday (November 14th, 2025), Finn Sonnekalb from Erfurt set a new German record over 1,000 meters in 1:06:48 minutes. On Saturday, the 18-year-old raced to third place over 1,500 meters and to his first World Cup podium. In 1:41.33 minutes he also set a new junior world record and a new German 1,500 meter record.
