Until last year, speed cameras or section checks along motorways were regularly switched off in consultation with the local public prosecutor’s office to keep the number of traffic fines under control. Just a matter of getting the administration done. Or the flash was only used from 140 kilometers per hour, again to avoid drowning in too many traffic fines. That is no longer the case. And the same will now happen with the speed cameras and section checks along regional roads, the justice minister responded to a question from N-VA MP Wouter Raskin. The news was confirmed to the newspapers by the FPS Justice.
According to the FPS Justice, the intention is to start phasing out all quotas and tolerance margins for checks along regional roads next year. Additional people are needed for this, both at the justice department and at the processing centers of the federal police, and the necessary budget has been made available for this.
The FPS Justice emphasized on Wednesday that nothing changes to the “technical margin”, that is the small margin to absorb measurement errors of the flash device. For example, you will be flashed in a zone 50 from 57 km per hour.
Partly due to the lifting of the limits on speed cameras along the highways, the number of speeding violations increased from 4.7 million euros in 2021 to 6.2 million in 2022.
