From Saturday 1 July 2023, laws and regulations apply specifically to geothermal heat. Until today, there is the same system for geothermal heat as for gas extraction, for example. Because geothermal energy works differently from other mining activities, there is now specific legislation with, for example, a separate permit structure. State Supervision of Mines monitors and enforces safety for people and the environment.
It is expected that this form of sustainable energy will be used in more places in the coming years. There are currently about 25 geothermal energy projects in the Netherlands. Most of these are for greenhouse horticulture, and some for heating homes. Geothermal energy, also known as geothermal energy, uses hot water from at least 500 meters underground to heat buildings. A heat network (such as district heating) is required to bring geothermal heat to the right place in the built environment. The technology has great potential for supplying sustainable heat to homes, greenhouse horticulture and industry.
Sharing knowledge and experience
To ensure that knowledge and experience about geothermal energy is shared properly, EBN will participate (financially) in geothermal energy projects. EBN is a public energy company with the State as sole shareholder.
Additional checks
The amended legislation is more in line with the practice of geothermal energy and, among other things, makes the financial check for companies that want to start geothermal energy projects more concrete. As a result, those involved and local residents know for sure that there is sufficient money for the project, but also for any damage. In addition, the legislation contains new rules to protect groundwater quality.
