Special! Soon there will be a solar eclipse in Zoetermeer

Are you a fan of special weather phenomena? Then Tuesday 25 October is a special day for you: a solar eclipse can be seen over Zoetermeer that day.

If you still have eclipse glasses in the attic, you can bring them out again in the next few days. On Tuesday, October 25, the moon will briefly pass in front of the sun. According to WeerOnline, the solar eclipse will start at 11:08 a.m. and will last until 13:03.

Get out of the sun

“Seen from Earth, it looks like someone has taken a bite out of the sun. The top of the sun is first shielded, after which the ‘bite’ moves towards the left side of the sun”, according to the meteorologists of WeerOnline. At its peak, at 12:05 p.m., about 22 percent of the sun is covered by the moon.

Although Zoetermeerders see a small bite out of the sun, it is very different in some places in the world. The greatest coverage is in parts of Russia, where 82 percent of the sun’s surface is obscured at its peak.

eclipse glasses

The safest way to admire the solar eclipse is to wear eclipse glasses. You can buy these at opticians in Zoetermeer, among others. These glasses block the most harmful UV and infrared radiation.

Projecting sunlight

Don’t have eclipse glasses and can’t get to the center anymore? Regular sunglasses do not protect your eyes enough, but the meteorologists from WeerOnline do have another tip: let the sunlight project onto a flat surface. “For example, use a colander or perforate a number of holes in an A4 sheet and let the sun shine through the holes. In the projection on the surface you can see that a bite has been taken from the sun.”

Weather forecast

Whether Zoetermeerders can see the solar eclipse well depends on the weather forecast for Tuesday 25 October. It is still difficult to estimate, but hopefully it will not be too cloudy!
