Special counsel slams FBI for rushing investigation into possible Trump-Russia ties | Abroad

The FBI has too hastily opened an investigation into the ties between former President Donald Trump with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign. That is the conclusion of Special Prosecutor John Durham, who argues that the security service had too little evidence and relied too much on tips from Trump’s political opponents came.

Durham spent four years working on his report on the FBI’s Trump investigation, which found no ties to Russia. In addition to opening the investigation was hasty, he also believes that the agency has handled this case differently than other politically sensitive topics, such as the allegations that were circulating at the time about Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton.

Durham says mistakes could have been avoided if the FBI had adhered to “its own principles of objectivity and integrity.” It would also have been better if the FBI had wondered if the agency was being manipulated for political or other purposes.

Trump response: ‘Voter has been scammed’

Trump will likely use the 306-page report as evidence of a witch hunt against him at the top of American society, though Durham’s investigation yields no major revelations to suggest that the FBI targeted Trump for political motives. Some Republicans are disappointed that no one has ended up behind bars. Both a Clinton campaign aide and a Russian investigator were acquitted of lying to the FBI.

Trump previously spoke of “the crime of the century” and had hoped the investigation results would be released before the previous presidential election, but Durham’s work was delayed. Despite this, Trump responded after publication on his own platform Truth Social: “The American voter has been scammed.”

The Justice Department says there is no evidence in the report that any deliberate errors were made.
