Will this announcement really bring anything to tenants in the capital?

Without a rent cap, there will be no new coalition agreement with his party, announces SPD state and parliamentary group leader Raed Saleh (46).

The federal government must protect tenants better, demanded the politician at the SPD state party conference at the weekend. State regulation of rents is important; the federal states must be allowed to create this option.

“If the opening clause comes, then I guarantee: There will be no new coalition with my SPD without the rent cap,” said Saleh pithily in his speech.

However: Red-Green-Red introduced a rent cap in Berlin in February 2020 – and embarrassed themselves greatly! The law was declared null and void a year later by the Federal Constitutional Court because the federal government had the legislative competence for this.

And so far there have been few signals from there to change the situation.
