Ever heard of the rental price brake? Allegedly. Any idea how it works? Probably less.

Sarah Walter wants to change that! She is spokeswoman for social policy for the SPD faction of the district assembly (BVV) for Tempelhof-Schoeneberg and has submitted an application there.

Your demand: The district office should inform tenants about the rental price brake when re-registering and registering.

► The rental price brake has been in place since 2015: In the case of new rentals, the rent may generally be a maximum of ten percent above the usual local rent. This is intended to curb an increase into the boundless.

But: “It’s enough to look at the relevant Internet platforms to see that there are always excessive rent demands,” says Walter. The problem: tenants could only have the amount of the rent checked themselves, “there is no office for that”.

But the more often the rental price brake is used, the more effectively an increase in the rent index can be prevented. Walter: “That’s another reason why it’s important for tenants to know the instrument.”
