SPD and Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia discuss the situation after the state elections

DÜSSELDORF (dpa-AFX) – Five days after the state elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Social Democrats and the Greens want to assess the political situation in a first meeting this Friday in Düsseldorf. The Greens announced this on Thursday. Five-strong delegations from both sides take part in the exchange, led by state party leaders Thomas Kutschaty (SPD) and Mona Neubaur (Greens).

Although the SPD came second behind the CDU in last Sunday’s election and had its worst result in a state election in North Rhine-Westphalia with 26.7 percent, top candidate Kutschaty wants to explore whether an alliance with the Greens and the FDP could be forged. Mathematically, such a traffic light coalition would be possible.

However, FDP top candidate Joachim Stamp is firmly assuming that the first black-green alliance will come about in NRW and sees these two parties as having a say in forming a government. Despite invitations from the CDU and SPD, the Free Democrats do not want to go into formal exploratory talks at the moment. However, there is no majority in the state parliament for a two-party alliance between the SPD and the Greens.

A first exchange between the CDU and the Greens, each with five-member delegations, was rated as pleasant, open and honest by the top candidates, Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) and the Green Party leader Neubaur./beg/DP/ngu
