Asgreen after crash from Tour of Switzerland
10:01 PM: Kasper Asgreen will not start in the fourth stage of the Tour of Switzerland on Wednesday. The 27-year-old Dane was one of the victims of a massive crash at the end of the third stage on Tuesday. That reports his team Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl.
The winner of the Tour of Flanders in 2021 went down with four kilometers to go, as did two teammates. Asgreen has a deep wound in his left knee that required stitches, and abrasions on his arms and legs. After a medical examination, it was decided that he would not continue driving. “I am disappointed that I have to leave the Tour of Switzerland,” said Asgreen. “I had a good feeling in the first few days and I was looking forward to the coming stages.”
Spanish Football Association gives women’s team the same premium as men
9.45 pm: The Spanish Football Federation RFEF has equalized the premiums for the national women’s team with those for the men. Spain is following the example of the United States, Norway, England and Brazil, among others. In those countries, the football players also receive the same premiums as the football players.
“This is a historic day for Spain,” said Irene Paredes, captain of the Spanish team that is one of the title candidates at the European Championship in England next month. “We want to be the best players, the best team and the best national team. We are going to the European Championships to give everything.”
On behalf of the Spanish Football Association, president Luis Rubiales signed the agreement for five years. The football players not only receive the same match premiums, but also receive money for their portrait rights and a percentage of new sponsor deals.
In the summer of 2019, the Dutch football association KNVB concluded a new agreement on the commercial fees with the football players who represent the Orange squad. It stated that ‘equal treatment of men’s and women’s football’ is being pursued.
Schilder improves his own Dutch record shot put
8.35 pm: Jessica Schilder has broken her own Dutch record in the open air in the shot put event in Kladno, Czech Republic. The Volendam threw the bullet on Tuesday at a distance of 19.19 meters. That is two centimeters further than she performed last Monday during the FBK Games in Hengelo.
The 23-year-old athlete was by far the best in the Czech Republic. The number two, Anita Márton from Hungary, only came to a distance of 17.65 meters. Painter threw the bullet twice at the record distance.
For the FBK Games in Hengelo on Monday, Schilder’s record was still at 18.89 meters.
Dutch on the podium during athletics competitions in Turku
8.17 pm: The Dutch Joris van Gool, Tony van Diepen and Nadine Visser achieved a podium place in their part at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland. The athletes won medals in the 100m, 800m and 100m hurdles respectively.
In the 100 meters series, Joris van Gool ran the second time of 10.34 seconds, enough to qualify for the final battle later in the evening. In the final, the Dutchman was again second with 10.38, again behind the Nigerian Raymond Ekevwo, who was also the fastest in the semi-final. However, Van Gool did not reach the World Cup limit of 10.05 seconds.
Tony van Diepen, the man in shape in the 800 meters, could not quite fulfill his favorite role from his distance. The Dutchman ran a time of 1.44.24 and was second behind the British Max Burgin. This made him the fourth fastest Dutchman ever at this distance. Only Bram Som, Rob Druppers and Marko Koers ran the 800 meters faster.
In the women’s race, Nadine Visser and Zoë Sedney both chased the 100-meter hurdles at the World Cup limit of 12.84 seconds. In the first heat Visser ran exactly the time needed, but Sedney was still two tenths of a second short. In the final, Visser improved herself with a time of 12.72, finishing third behind Tobi Amusan from Nigeria and Britany Anderson from Jamaica. Sedney was 13.07 seconds short of the World Cup time and was eighth.
Bordeaux to reduce debts to third level
8:02 PM: The French football club Girondins Bordeaux played at the highest level this year, but will play in the third division after the summer. Bordeaux were relegated from Ligue 1 and have now been moved back to National 1, the third tier in France, due to major financial difficulties. The six-time champion of France, who celebrated the last league title in 2009, reportedly has a debt of more than 40 million euros.
The committee that monitors the financial situation of all French football clubs has decided to move Bordeaux back one division. This means that the team of one-time Orange international Javairô Dilrosun will go down two classes after the relegation.
The 23-year-old attacker Dilrosun played on a rental basis at Bordeaux last season. The Hertha BSC mercenary scored two goals in 32 league matches. Bordeaux finished bottom in Ligue 1.
Willem II one duel without away supporters
7:48 PM: Willem II will play the next away match without accompanying supporters. The Tilburg club announces that it has accepted a settlement proposal from the KNVB.
At the beginning of February, Willem II was given a suspended sentence as a result of disturbances at RKC-uit and FC Utrecht-uit. This meant that the club was not allowed to take away supporters from a match as soon as comparable disturbances occurred within two years.
Following incidents during Willem II’s away match against Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer, the KNVB has ratified the sanction.
Visser runs World Cup limit at 100 meters hurdles in Turku
7:42 p.m.: Nadine Visser has reached the World Cup limit of 12.84 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles for women at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku. The Dutch athlete crossed the line in the series at exactly that time, but improved herself in the final to a time of 12.72. This was her best time of the season.
However, both times were not enough for first place in the race in Finland. In the series, Visser had to acknowledge her superiority in Jamaican Britany Anderson, who was slightly faster with 12.67 seconds. In the final, both Anderson and Nigerian Tobi Amusan were faster than Visser.
Fisherman’s compatriot Zoë Sedney also managed to qualify for the final, but could not meet the World Cup limit – just like in the series. Her times of 13.04 and 13.07 were not fast enough.
American football worldwide on Apple TV
7:12 PM: The Apple TV app will show all American football matches for the next ten years. The organization of Major League Soccer (MLS) hopes to reach a worldwide audience in this way. As of 2023, all matches from the American league and the national cup tournament can be viewed via Apple’s streaming service.
“This is a historic first for a major professional sports league,” the press release said. “Fans from all over the world can watch all matches in one place without local blocks or the need to purchase a traditional pay TV channel.” According to American media, Apple pays a minimum of 250 million dollars (about 240 million euros) annually for the broadcast rights and that amount increases according to the number of subscriptions taken out.
Season ticket holders of the clubs from the MLS get free access to the streaming service of the American technology company, which normally has to be paid for. All matches will be commentated in English and Spanish. French commentary is also provided for matches with Canadian clubs.
The MLS started in 1996 with ten clubs, but now consists of 29 teams. The United States will host the World Cup in 2026 along with Canada and Mexico. By offering their own league worldwide through the Apple TV app, Americans hope to further promote and develop football in their country.
Dutch boxing boss wants new elections after CAS win
6:28 PM Chairman Boris van der Vorst of the Dutch boxing federation is counting on a new presidential election at the international federation IBA, now that he has won his appeal case at the CAS. The international sports tribunal ruled that Van der Vorst and four candidate board members were wrongly excluded from the elections at the IBA congress in Istanbul last month. Van der Vorst, who had presented himself as a candidate for the incumbent Russian chairman Umar Kremlev, wants the IBA to call new elections now.
“That is our commitment. But whether that will happen and how, remains to be seen,” says Van der Vorst. “We are now going to discuss new elections with the board of the World Boxing Federation as soon as possible. It is not about personal ambitions or interests; we do it to give our boxers an Olympic future. To speak in boxing terms, we won this round and gave our opponent a minimum of 8 counts. On to the next round.”
Van den Assem is now really stopping at Orange
10.22 am: Hockey star Ireen van den Assem has decided to really stop at Orange now. The 32-year-old hockey player had already put an end to her international career in October 2021, but returned to Orange in March this year after a months-long break. Van den Assem, who had to miss the Olympic Games due to a muscle injury, joined the national team at the invitation of interim national coach Jamilon Mülders.
After three international matches, Van den Assem decided to announce her retirement as an international again. She did that just before Mülders announced the World Cup selection. “Maybe it seems crazy to decide that just before a selection moment. But for me it was the best moment,” she says in an interview with hockey.nl.
Van den Assem, who is struggling with a chronic Achilles tendon injury, played her last international match against England at the beginning of June. She helped Orange to victory with a goal and an assist. “It’s okay,” she says. “I have been honest with myself. It feels different, very different from a year ago. Now I can stop with my head held high and a big smile.”
Van den Assem became European champion twice with the Orange and also world champion in 2018.
