Spain legend Suárez dead at 88

“Farewell to Luisito”

Spanish football legend and 1960 Ballon d’Or winner Luis Suárez has died in Milan at the age of 88. This was confirmed by Inter Milan on its website on Sunday. Suárez played for the club between 1961 and 1970, and later took over as coach for the Italians several times.

The former midfielder played 32 caps for Spain and became European champions with the team in 1964. From 1988 to 1991 he coached Spain’s national team. “The legendary former Nerazzurri midfielder has died aged 88. We are deeply saddened by Luisito’s departure,” Inter wrote. Suárez “inspired generations of football enthusiasts” and was “a unique footballer” and “great Inter player”.

Although Suárez started his football career in Spain, he has spent most of his career in Italy. In 1960, while still a FC Barcelona player, he was the first male footballer in Spain to be awarded the “Ballon d’Or” as the best footballer in Europe. In 1973 he ended his active career and worked as a coach until 1995.
