NASA is already planning a flight to the moon with the Artemis II mission next year, but a moon landing is not actually planned until Artemis III. With this mission, NASA wants to send the first female astronaut and the first astronaut of color to the moon in 2025. The astronauts will therefore explore the area around the south pole of the moon for the first time.
Axiom Space is responsible for supplying the lunar walk system, including the spacesuit, for Artemis III. The spacesuit was named the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU, and is based on a NASA prototype. It includes the latest technology, improved mobility and additional protection against lunar hazards.
Experts from NASA determined the technical and safety standards that the spacesuits must meet. Axiom Space is responsible for the design, development and production of the suits and support equipment, including instruments, to enable the Artemis III mission. The company will test the suit in a space-like environment prior to the mission. NASA remains responsible for astronaut training, mission planning and approval of the service systems, the US space agency reports on its website.
