The SP faction in the Limburg parliament wants to sever all financial ties between Limburg and Russia in order to ‘stop financing Putin’s war machine’.
To this end, the socialists put questions to the provincial government on Thursday.
For example, the SP wants to know whether the Province of Limburg has investments or participations in or with Russia. Whether maintains a business relationship with Russian companies or shareholders. The SP is also targeting possible ongoing lobbying processes in Russia. If there are financial lines between Limburg and Russia, those of the SP must be broken quickly.
Gazprom
Many Limburg municipalities are known to have concluded business contracts with Gazprom, which supplies gas. It is well known that the proceeds flow back to the Russian treasury and thus help finance the war in Ukraine. The SP wants to know whether the Province of Limburg also has such a contract with the Russian state-owned company.
Oligarchs
Where possible, the SP does not only want to cut business ties, but also possibly freeze assets of wealthy Russian oligarchs in Limburg. The party asks whether the province has insight into this and is prepared to take action.

Furthermore, the socialists want, if possible, the Province of Limburg to stop trade between Limburg companies and Russia, with the exception of food products and medical goods. Much is still unclear, as the SP also realizes. That is why it is good to gain more insight into the volume of trade between Limburg and Russia.
Cabbage and the goat
SP party leader Marc van Caldenberg calls on the provincial government to use everything in its power to stop the war in Ukraine. He urges urgency, especially if it turns out that there are still fellow provincials in the ravaged country. He wants to know whether the province will assist in getting Limburgers out of Ukraine. “We can no longer try to spare the cabbage and the goat, because that only strengthens Putin’s position,” writes Caldenberg.
