South Korea pardons ex-President Park Geun-hye, convicted of corruption in 2018
South Korean authorities pardoned former President Park Geun-hye, writes Yonhap citing government statement.
Park Geun-hye’s presidency was suspended in 2017 following impeachment proceedings. She was accused of corruption and was sentenced in April 2018 to 24 years in prison and a fine of 18 billion won (about $ 17.5 million at the then exchange rate). After that, the verdict was reviewed, and in January of this year, the country’s Supreme Court upheld A 20-year prison sentence for the former head of state on corruption and abuse of power charges.

According to the agency, the ex-president was included in the list of amnesties in honor of the upcoming New Year. This decision was made due to the deteriorating health of 69-year-old Park Geun-hye. This year she was hospitalized three times for shoulder and lower back pain and underwent surgery.
The corruption scandal involving Park Geun Hye began in 2016. The investigation claimed that her close friend Choi Sun Sil, using her friendship with the president, extorted money from large corporations, including Samsung and Lotte.
