Long-standing DFB goalkeeper coach Andreas Köpke follows Jürgen Klinsmann to South Korea. After taking over as the new coach of the South Korean national team, ex-national coach Klinsmann named his future assistants and advisors for the first time on Thursday at South Korea’s National Football Center in Paju. “The coaching staff will be a mixture of Europe and here (South) Korea,” he said. According to this, Köpke should become a goalkeeping coach and thus fill the role that he had played for the German selection team for years until 2021. In 2004 he was brought on board by Klinsmann, and later the two also worked together at Hertha BSC for a short time.
Klinsmann reiterated after his arrival in South Korea on Wednesday that his short-term goal with the “Taegeuk Warriors” is to win the Asian Cup in Qatar early next year. In addition to Köpke, former Bundesliga professional Andreas Herzog and Paolo Stringara will also help him, both of whom had already assisted Klinsmann during his time as coach of the US national team. South Korean-born Canadian Michael Kim, who worked under Klinsmann’s predecessor Paulo Bento, is also set to join the team. “I hope you can bring the pieces together and everyone benefits from each other,” Klinsmann said.

In addition, the ex-scorer emphasized that he would have the former Bundesliga professional Du-Ri Cha as an advisor. Together with Cha, Klinsmann most recently worked for FIFA as a member of the Technical Study Group at the World Cup in Qatar. Klinsmann, who has been given a contract by the South Korean Football Association with a contract until the 2026 World Cup, said Cha plays an important role because of his connections to the South Korean K-League.

Klinsmann hinted at the style of play he wants to play in South Korea: “My personal background is as a striker. That’s why I like to always attack, and that means I’d rather win a game 4-3 than 1-0.” At the same time, the former professional made it clear that he first had to go through a “huge learning curve” in order to “understand what is best for (South) Korea”. He will make his debut as South Korea coach on March 24 in the international match against Colombia.
