South Africa secures third place at the Africa Cup of Nations

South Africa’s national soccer team secured third place at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire).

Bafana Bafana beat the Democratic Republic of Congo with Silas from VfB Stuttgart 6-5 on penalties in the “small final” on Saturday evening after 90 goalless minutes.

Nigeria and the Ivorian hosts around BVB striker Sebastien Haller will contest the final on Sunday (9 p.m./Sportdigital) in Abidjan.

Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the match winner with two saved penalties for South Africa, which achieved its best finish at an African Championship since third place in 2000 after the bitter semi-final defeat on penalties against Nigeria.

For DR Congo, who lost to Ivory Coast, Silas had the best chances in regular time. In the initial phase (9th) and after just over an hour (65th), the VfB striker had no luck in finishing.
