Source of deadly ‘Blob’ discovered: giant heat bath responsible for marine heat waves | Environment

Researchers have finally discovered where the “Blob” or “Blob” – an underwater heat wave in the Pacific Ocean – comes from. This blob has been responsible several times for the massive deaths of fish and other sea creatures. In the professional magazine ‘Communications Earth and EnvironmentScientists describe a ‘heat bath’ in the northeast Pacific Ocean, which is expected to cause even more marine heat waves.

Rising temperatures, heat waves and extreme weather conditions have not left our oceans untouched. This is also apparent from a study by the University of Hamburg. Scientists from this university have discovered a gigantic pool in the northeast Pacific Ocean that is up to three degrees warmer than the rest of the Pacific Ocean. The area is three million square meters and was created by human influences.

In addition, the research shows that the temperature of the large area has risen by an average of 0.05 degrees Celsius per year over the past 25 years. The consequence? There have been 31 marine heatwaves in the region in the past two decades, compared to just nine between 1982 and 1999.

More blobs

The hot spring will continue to raise the temperature of the Pacific Ocean, the researchers say, increasing both the frequency and intensity of marine heat waves — such as the Blob or Blob.

The Blob of Blob is an underwater heat wave that makes the water several degrees warmer than normal. Usually, this warming is accompanied by the mass death of certain marine animals and creatures. “The sharp rise in water temperature will push ecosystems further to their limits,” warns researcher Armineh Barkhordarian (University of Hamburg).

The most recent marine heat wave lasted for three years, from 2019 to 2021. During this heat wave, the water was as much as six degrees warmer than normal in certain places.
