The ratings flop Khalid & Sophie closed the season yesterday with a broadcast in which the regular guests were allowed to nominate people for a place in a fictional wax museum. Soundos El Ahmadi chose Kick Out Zwarte Piet activist Jerry Afriyie. If there is anyone who deserves an image, it is him, according to the comedienne.

Proud of Jerry

Soundos is proud of Jerry. “When you finally have someone who wants to leave the world a better place for all our children… We are very much against that. Especially against black activists, we Dutch are really tough and tough. I’m ashamed of that too. I have vicarious shame for it.”

She continues: “Jerry Afriyie is someone who takes up the fight because if one day he’s not there anymore… Basically what I have a little bit: we both have big mouths, we stand for things, but we do that too, because one day we will be gone and hopefully we will leave behind a safer Netherlands for all our children.”

Quarrel with Sjuul

Sjuul Paradijs, former editor-in-chief of De Telegraaf, returns to this after a short film. “I do not agree with you. I don’t mean to be rude, but…”

Soundos then loudly: “No, but I didn’t ask you anything either.”

Sjuul: “No, but I want to say it anyway, because I think it is very exaggerated by you, of: ‘We leave a better Netherlands behind’, while everyone – whether you are white, black or whatever – from anything can be. You get education, there is no distinction there.”

dinosaur opinion

Soundos takes a hard line against it. “I think that’s a very nice story, but you are not me and you have not experienced the things that I have experienced and you have never experienced that when you open your mouth, people react to you in this way. So these dinosaur-like opinions don’t really interest me. I really don’t care.”

Sjuul: “But I think what you’re saying is exaggerated.”

Soundos: “And I think it’s very dangerous to think what I’m saying is exaggerated, because this is the reality now in the Netherlands. I find these kinds of reactions very dangerous and very scary and De Telegraaf, which you also worked for, is very good at framing people.”

‘I don’t listen to you’

Soundos criticizes De Telegraaf. “He also published a whole front page with Jerry at the time, in which he was kind of a scary black man with thunderclouds… I don’t know if we can show that? You became rich with that, with framing people, so I’m not going to listen to you anyway. But thank you for your opinion.”

Sjuul: “I really like an open discussion, but you can’t have it at the moment.”

Humble response

Hostess Sophie Hilbrand sided with Soundos. “I understand what you’re saying, because it’s actually about the black people who take action often encounter a kind of misunderstanding of: ‘You have equal opportunities, don’t you?’”

Soundos urges Sjuul to be modest. “When those people tell their story, the idea is to calm down a bit and just think and listen, like: ‘Oh, I’m not experiencing this myself.’ And have a somewhat more modest response to that.”
