The Danish professional cyclist Sören Kragh Andersen has won the 62nd edition of the traditional Eschborn-Frankfurt one-day classic.
After about 204 kilometers, the two-time Tour de France stage winner won the WorldTour race on May 1 in front of the Alte Oper in Frankfurt in the sprint of a ten-man breakaway ahead of the Austrian Patrick Konrad and the Italian Alessandro Fedeli.
Due to the route, which has been increased to 3000 meters in altitude, mostly mountaineering riders belonged to the leading group at the finish. The peloton could no longer approach decisively. The best German on May Day was Georg Steinhauser in sixth place.
The German champion Nils Politt, last year’s winner Sam Bennett and the former German winners John Degenkolb (2011) and Pascal Ackermann (2019) went away empty-handed and did not come close to the podium.
Almost 100 kilometers before the finish, the former tour fourth Emanuel Buchmann fell and ended the race prematurely.
The route led the top riders up the Feldberg twice this year. All in all, the sprinters had a harder time on Labor Day than in previous years due to the many meters of altitude difference.
