Sonny Kittel announces farewell to Hamburger SV on Instagram

Pherai approaching

Midfielder Sonny Kittel’s future no longer lies with Hamburger SV. The 30-year-old, who was about to leave in previous transfer periods, said this via Instagram. According to this, he has not yet received an offer from the second division club to extend his contract, which expires in nine days, and has drawn appropriate consequences. Meanwhile, the resulting gap in the attacking midfield at the North Germans should be filled shortly, the transfer of Braunschweig’s Immanuel Pherai is reportedly imminent.

Kittel moved from Ingolstadt to the Elbe on a free transfer in 2019 and after four years can look back on an impressive record of 76 goals in 140 competitive games for the “Rothosen”. In the season finale in particular, the native of Gießen had put in strong performances for HSV, contributing five goals and two assists in the last nine games alone. His opening goal in the relegation second leg against VfB Stuttgart had briefly spread hope for a turnaround in the promotion battle, which ultimately failed to materialize.

Sonny Kittel justifies departure from HSV: Waited 2 years for an offer

“I thought for a long time whether I should speak at all. Due to the fact that I have hardly ever spoken publicly in the past, I see this as a good opportunity to explain myself and my decision. Almost two years ago, I clearly signaled to those responsible at the club that I felt very comfortable at the club and in Hamburg and that I would like to stay longer. I was repeatedly told that they would like to get together as soon as possible, but unfortunately there hasn’t been an offer to date,” Kittel wrote on Instagram.

The offensive man, who is always considered to be extremely talented but also prone to injury, explained further: “Anyone who has dealt with my career to a greater or lesser extent knows that I have had to struggle with several setbacks in the past and that associated fears and worries about the future have developed. That’s why my goal was always to have certainty for me and my family early on about how things will continue. Precisely for the reasons mentioned, I had to deal more with the existing requests in the last transfer phases. Of course, a long term and financial security played a relevant role. Ultimately, the change did not come about for a variety of reasons. Despite everything, I have always tried to help the team with a lot of heart and passion in order to achieve our common goal.”

Kittel on HSV farewell: “Tried to do my best until the last day”

Kittel is the Hamburg team’s third departure for the coming season (excluding expiring loans). “Four years at HSV are now over. 140 games and I loved being able to play football in this jersey, to be able to drive to training every morning and to be able to wear the HSV clothes. Until the last day I tried to do my best and be a role model for many young players in the team and to bring joy to the fans. Thank you to everyone who supported me and to everyone who wore the jersey with the 10 and my name on it. That fills me with pride and gratitude. I wish the club, the team, but above all the staff behind the team, the employees and you fans all the best. I got to know a lot of great people and thank you all for the valuable last four years.”

With the Dutchman Pherai, an attacking midfielder should already be in the starting blocks as a replacement for the coat. According to media reports, HSV is pulling the exit clause in the 22-year-old playmaker’s contract, which expires in 2024. Depending on the medium, this is between 800,000 and 1.5 million euros.
