Dear SDF Family,
I have decided to have my digital distributor cancel my music on Spotify. I have walked long in the footsteps of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. Unlike them, I did not have polio as a child – had there not been a vaccination, their lives and countless others would have been terribly compromised. So it likely hit them extra hard that Joe Rogan and some of the guests on his podcast are blatantly lying or at the very least leaving misinformation unquestioned about the Covid-19 vaccination.
For me, the music business is not so different from other branches of big business. Spotify pays artists $0.001 per stream, but that’s only part of the truth. The big players make more and the indie artists inequitably make less, though we are rich in the best fans. My research shows that Tidal and Apple Music are a better choice: Tidal pays $0.009 per song, plus it offers high fidelity sound, bringing the music to you closer to the way it should really be heard. Apple pays on a pyramid scale that makes me about $0.004 per song.
FYI about Tidal, the sound quality is 100% better than Apple or Spotify.
In thinking outside the box we have decided to do a pay what you want on all my song downloads on my website for the rest of this February. Financially this is much more respectable for me.
Please join me in boycotting Spotify. It’s just one little thing, but no action to improve your life and mine is too small.
