Sónar 2022: Rojuu illuminates the darkness

Things happen at Sónar that are beyond the script. Around there they have seen wandering horses that meekly advanced towards one of the festival stages. This is how Cecilio G arrived at his concert in 2019 in the last ‘normal’ edition of Sónar, a ‘performance’ for which the city council filed the organizers for the prohibition of using animals in shows (today, by the way, Mayor Colau and the ragpicker from Bogatell greeted each other at the Fira de Montjuïc).

This Thursday, delving into that ‘show’ tradition beyond music, the young Catalan Rojuuone of the attractions of the opening day, has entered an altar carried on the shoulders of a group of ‘nazarenos’, as a procession of Holy Week. A version of that since it was something like an ’emo procession’ -several subjects followed him-, one of the subcultures and codes that are integrated into the music and figure of Rojuu. A) Yes, self-proclaimed Lord of Darknesswith an overwhelming personality at only 19 years old, has imposed darkness while crossing the sun terrace of the great esplanade of the festival.

Rojuu did not hesitate, already on stage (a space that Depression Sonora had premiered just before) wearing dyed blonde hair and dressed in black from top to bottom (also his voluminous boots), in welcoming those present to Sónar followed by “‘Fuck’ Primavera Sound”. The songs of the Catalan artist ooze a special, very deep sensitivity, and thus permeate his followers. The connection is strong and, in turn, he reciprocates by drawing a heart with his hands every two by three. It is a generational beacon that illuminates from the darkness. Rojuu has officiated with his most recent verses, especially those that include his penultimate album ‘Kor kor lake’ (2022): from ‘Nezuko’ to ‘One more walk’, which he dedicated to his deceased dog. Also some songs from ‘Bad trip camp’, the album that confirmed it three years ago. His 2022 pop was followed by “la hora loca”, a final part for the pogos and the hardcore party. The Argentinian Saramalacara and Orslok collaborated in this, with the wild ‘Tofu delivery’.

And if Sónar is a global village of sounds, on this first day Rojuu was a good example of local talent and emerged from the labyrinth of the ‘urban’. He had hardly set foot on a stage when the last edition of the festival was held, and Ms Nina, an Argentine based in Madrid, had been making her ass move for years with her ‘neoperreo’. This Thursday she did it again at Sónar, closing her anthem ‘Tu sicaria’ with her. Before, at more than 30 degrees and under the sun, the Catalan Awwz heated up – even more if possible – the start of the festival. And another banner of urban music in a version that crosses electronica, Chico Blanco, began in the middle of the afternoon to propose that the party rumble.
