In this year’s book about Mark Lanegan, former bandmate Nick Oliveri reveals that Lanegan helped write the lyrics to Nirvana’s Something in the Way. The two played together on Queens of the Stone Age from 2000 to 2004.

“Mark said he co-wrote the lyrics to ‘Something in the Way’ on NEVERMIND with Kurt,” Oliveri explains Author Greg Prato. “But Kurt was helping Mark with his solo stuff, ‘The Winding Sheet.’ Instead of getting paid, they agreed, ‘Hey man, I helped you with the lyrics, you helped me with my song. We’re even and what happens, just happens’. Little did Mark know that if he had been featured on ‘Something in the Way’ he would have made a lot of money. I remember he got a little annoyed about that: ‘If I had that ‘Something in the Way’ mention…’”

NEVERMIND has sold 30 million copies. In addition, after Kurt Cobain’s death, Lanegan was offered by Courtney Love to record the previously unreleased Nirvana song “You Know You’re Right”. Ultimately, however, that didn’t materialize and the song was posthumously featured on a 2002 Nirvana compilation.

Mark Lanegan passed away on February 22, 2022 at the age of 57. Celebrating his role within the grunge and alternative rock scene, Greg Prato interviewed various associates of the musician, including former members of his bands Queens of the Stone Age and Screaming Trees, and published the conversations as A book.
