Even before the meeting, Veitola ponders Päivi’s position in the public eye. She is also known as the spouse of former prime minister Paavo Lipponen, 81.
– It really embarrasses me that the first thought that comes to my mind about Päivi Lipponen is that she is the spouse of former Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen. Who would want to be known only as someone’s spouse? Veitola ponders.

In addition to her work as a writer, Päivi works as a history and social studies teacher at an adult high school. He states that this may come as a surprise to many.
– Many probably think that I am a housewife in Töölö. I’m filing my nails, she laughs.
Veitola and Lipponen go on a night trip to Paavo and Päivi’s second apartment in Porvoo. In Helsinki’s Töölö, Veitola and Lipponen also bump into the ex-prime minister.
Paavo Lipponen says that he is currently writing memoirs.
– That’s my main job now. The only problem with that is that when I don’t remember anything, Paavo Lipponen states.
A dog for company
Päivi says that she got herself a dog named Teo, with whom she even goes out for coffee. He says that the dog is a great companion for him.
– Don’t you have Paavos company anymore? Maria Veitola asks.
– Paavo has his own world. He has his own memoir writing and the rest of the world. It’s a big age difference, life is different. I myself am so keen on moving, going and doing hobbies, you can’t share such things, says Päivi.

Veitola and Lipponen arrive in the peaceful forest landscapes of Porvoo. Lipponen states that there is a lot to do in maintaining a second apartment.
– I always say that someone will make a really good spouse out of me when I’ve taught everyone how to take care of a house like this, he says with a laugh.
Veitola asks Lippose how he feels when he is remembered as Paavo’s spouse.
Lipponen says that he recently met his acquaintances, whom he had not seen for almost ten years.
– They said: “Hey Päivi”. The next question was: “What’s wrong with Paavo?”. I thought you don’t care at all what’s up with me? Lipponen ponders.
– I did say that maybe you should contact my husband and ask him directly. They didn’t do it maliciously, they were just more interested in Paavo’s stories than mine, he continues.

It’s hard to imagine what life would have been like without Paavo.
– Yes, it’s hard to think that life would have gone differently if you had been in a different situation. Good things have come in life, then they have paid a heavy price for them, says Lipponen.
He refers to the fact that the results of his own work may have been invalidated and belittled alongside his spouse’s.
– Maybe they have been compared to the feats of Paavo Lipponen, he concludes.
