Sure, electric toothbrushes for children should clean well. And if they fall on the ground, they shouldn’t be ready for e-waste right away. This is the case with some brushes.
It happens quickly: A clumsy hand movement and the child’s electric toothbrush slams onto the bathroom tiles.
By no means every model intended for children remains unscathed. This is shown by a study by the magazine “Öko-Test” (issue 5/2023).
The testers tested eleven electric toothbrushes for children. This also included a drop test in which the devices fell onto a tiled floor from different angles.
Technology defective, cracks in the housing
Five models did not cope well: Some toothbrushes could no longer be switched on after a few falls, others showed cracks in the housing. According to “Öko-Test”, moisture can penetrate through them and paralyze the technology. Especially since some user manuals state that damaged devices should no longer be used.
The “eco-testers” are convinced that electric toothbrushes can also be significantly more robust. Because in an examination of electric toothbrushes for adults, 14 out of 15 models passed the drop test.
These are the test winners
But there were also a total of four models that were able to convince the testers – not only because they withstood the drop test well.
Two devices got the best mark “very good”: the “Sonic Toothbrush Eco Vibe 3 Junior Minions from happy brush (49.95 euros) and the Philips Sonicare For Kids Sonic Toothbrush HX6322/04 (49.99 euros).
Also two models cut “good” from: the Kids Electric Toothbrush Disney Frozen II from Oral B (19.95 euros) and the “Prokudent Kids Cordless Toothbrush The Little Dragon Coconut” (11.99 euros) from Rossman.
They all convinced the eco-testers with a high proportion of well-rounded bristles that are gentle on children’s gums and teeth.
Lithium-ion batteries are also installed in the two “very good” models, which work over a long period of time without major charging losses.
