Solution nuisance provincial roads Horst one step closer | 1Limburg

After years of discussions, a solution for the nuisance of the provincial roads N554 and N556 seems a step closer. The municipality of Horst aan de Maas takes over the roads from the Province of Limburg. This brings the changes to the roads desired by local residents into view.

The municipality of Horst aan de Maas and the province have reached an agreement in principle about the transfer of the roads.

The N554, which runs through the middle of Meerlo and Tienray, has been a thorn in the side of the inhabitants for years. To make it clear to the municipality and province that they are done with speeding drivers and all the freight traffic that drives through the villages, they put their cars on the provincial road in November as a protest.

Residents of the N556 from Horst to Sevenum have also been complaining for a long time about inconvenience caused by the speed and congestion on the road and are asking for adjustments.

It is not yet clear what measures will be taken to reduce the nuisance. “In broad terms, we now agree on the transfer of the roads. We still have to work out the details,” said alderman Eric Beurskens van Horst aan de Maas. The province and the municipality have been discussing provincial roads for years, but always without result. So that is now about to change.

The transfer, including maintenance and management, will take place in phases. The N554 is expected to be transferred after the summer. The municipality of Horst aan de Maas will not take over the N556 until 2024. Until then, the province will maintain the road.
