Solution in the making for ‘unsafe’ bus stop at Eelde airport

The unsafe situation around the bus stop at Groningen Airport Eelde on the busy Burgemeester Legroweg is coming to an end. At least, the province has plans to do so. This is evident from answers to questions asked by the VVD.

Travelers who come to the airport by bus should go to the Legroweg stop. There is a narrow sidewalk there. In addition, there is a speed reduction of a maximum of 60 kilometers per hour at the stop, but many motorists are still able to keep up the speed. Some passengers still have to cross the road. The airport considers this an undesirable situation.

It was also reason for VVD Staten Kees Vianen and Annigje Udinga to denounce the situation. The Liberals thought ‘it is important that measures are taken to ensure safety and increase accessibility’, especially because the number of public transport users is increasing.

The Provincial Executive has announced that the municipality of Tynaarlo as road manager and the Groningen Drenthe public transport agency have proposed ‘various alternatives’ to make the bus stop ‘traffic safe’.

In any case, there will be a ‘traffic-safe access road for the new Business Park Bravo and a traffic-safe connection to the Burgemeester JG Legroweg by means of a roundabout’, according to the province’s response to the VVD questions. Money for this comes from the so-called ‘mobility fund’.

Earlier this year, a majority in the House of Representatives approved two proposals by VVD member Daniël Koerhuis to tackle roads around the airport. 6.5 million euros are available for this.
