Solidarity walk for victims of gas explosion Ostend

Three people were seriously injured, and two catering establishments were also completely destroyed by the explosion. The owners are people with disabilities. They hope to be able to start up again soon.

The walk goes from Dunkirk to domain Raversyde. Friedl’s parents also join in. Friedl was badly burned in the explosion just after she evacuated everyone in time. Now Friedl is still in a coma, soon she will wake up again. Hilde Plets, Friedl’s mother: “I think she will be very emotional. She is a very strong lady. Friends have already told me that they will be there for her. It will also be necessary because she has another for a very long time. Really. It’s going to be very difficult. For her and for everyone.”

Also material damage

The material damage caused by the explosion was also extensive. Restaurant Lizette, where Friedl worked, has meanwhile been demolished. Saskia Verelst, director of the non-profit association Duinhelm: “In the first place, we naturally think of the physical victims with whom we sympathize very strongly. But actually we are all a bit of a victim. Because a part of our heart and soul is gone, where we invested a lot in it.”

Delegations of the police and fire brigade were also represented on the walk. Both corps also count one of the badly hit victims who are still recovering. Everyone is still processing the blow.
