Sointu Borg takes a stand on social media surveillance in working life

Sointu Borg takes a stand on employers’ social media monitoring.

In his latest Instagram update, Diili winner and entrepreneur Sointu Borg takes a stand on employers’ surveillance of their subordinates on social media.

In his text, Borg reminds that the employer does not own his subordinates.

– What do I mean by owning? Many employers “monitor” and supervise their employees’ free time via social media, either secretly or completely openly, Borg writes.

According to Borg, many may wonder if it is possible to publish material from festivals, for example, on social media.

He says that several of his acquaintances had to be interviewed at the workplace because of their social media posts.

– Several of my acquaintances have had to be interviewed (yes, interviewed) by management or their superiors regarding their use of social media in situations where they have not genuinely done anything wrong or harmful. The phenomenon is surprisingly common.

According to Borg, the custom is ridiculous.

– The employer does not care what the employee does in his free time, as long as the worker performs his duties and arrives on time and safely to work.

Borg also takes a broader stance on the current work culture.

– Even in the 2020s, many larger operators still run their houses in the style of “management by the devil”, party speeches about flexibility are blind. Messages should be answered during holidays and IG stories should seamlessly support the company’s brand and habitus. The soul and social space should therefore be sold at a monthly price of 2-5 tons, so it’s cheap!

– Go ahead and post pictures of your wine glass and bikini bottom. Not anyone’s business, Borg concludes.

Borg became famous for the Diili program in 2021. He won his own season and got the job of development director at Jaajo Linnonmaa’s company.

In June, it was reported that Borg’s employment as development director has ended.
