It was 2010. Hedvig was preparing for his birthday party. He turned 10 years old. Everyone was coming to the Skåne countryside: father from Gothenburg, aunts, grandmother… In a Swedish documentary completed last year Daughters As a young adult, Hedvig remembers how guests started arriving with gifts.

– The situation was very strange, he says by Jenifer Malmqvist in award-winning guidance.

What made the situation strange was that there was also an ambulance on the scene. Hedvig’s little sister Sofia’s and big sister The lodge single mother Carolina had killed himself just moments before. The children were 8, 10 and 16 years old and all of them were mom’s girls.

– I avoid telling you that it was my birthday then. Not because of myself, but because others might consider what her mother did on such a day as particularly wrong, Hedvig wants to protect her mother.

Carolina suffered from bipolar disorder, for which she had also been hospitalized. However, it did not help, and the mother ended up with an irreversible act. He was found by the firstborn. In the documentary, the three siblings are met both as children and as adults. They have been photographed both in 2011 and 2022 by Jenifer Malmqvist.

Those left behind have mixed memories of the dark day. Sofia, the youngest, is still sure of one thing.

– I was forbidden to look out the window. I was taken away from the window.

All three have moved on with their lives and dealt with great grief and loss in different ways. Sofia has finally found the right kind of conversation aid suitable for her age. At the time of filming, three months have passed since her last panic attack. That’s the longest gap ever. Hedvig does not go to therapy, even though she feels that there is something to be dealt with. Maja feels that she is very alone with her relationship with her mother.
