Ice hockey national coach Toni Söderholm still has a job as head coach in the NHL in mind, despite the long-term contract extension with the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB). “Yes, I have this dream,” said the Finn, who had extended his contract as national coach last Wednesday until 2026, to “Sky Sport”.
The NHL is an area “where you can dream a lot, but the truth can also look different. That’s not in my head every day, but somewhere it irritates me,” added Söderholm. Making it into the NHL as a coach is “incredibly difficult. It’s very difficult to say whether it will ever happen,” he said.
However, following his contract extension, the 43-year-old’s current focus is entirely on the national team. “We should keep pushing and pushing so that we can get back up in standing and eventually finish first, second or third in the tournaments. That’s the ultimate goal,” said Söderholm, who after the disappointing Olympic performance in Beijing the DEB selection in May at the World Cup in Helsinki.
