Soccer player attacks referee after yellow card

A regional league game escalated after the referee showed a player a yellow card. It was probably the last game for the 34-year-old.

After a soccer player punched a referee in Argentina, she didn’t want to let the incident rest. The 30-year-old Dalma Cortadi reported the 34-year-old player Cristian Tirone on Monday (local time), as she told the sports newspaper “Olé”. Tirone had been arrested after the attack.

Cortadi: “The man should pay for what he did”

As video footage of the incident shows, Tirone aimed his fist at Cortadi’s head from behind, but hit her neck. The attack came after the referee showed the player a yellow card for foul play. The 30-year-old fell to the ground, but got up again immediately. She was taken to the hospital and observed there for several hours before being released.

“I fell and don’t remember anything else,” Cortadi describes the incident in “Olé”. “When I got up again, I was dizzy and nauseous. I’ve never had anything like this before.” Now she wants “justice” and “that this man pays for what he did”. It doesn’t matter that she’s a woman.

The attack happened during a regional league match between clubs Independencia and Garmense. The game was then abandoned. Tirone’s club Garmense condemned the attack and suspended the player for life.
