Champions League triumph greatest victory
Courtois has been there since 2012 when titles are awarded on the European stage. From Genk he went to Chelsea and then quickly to Real’s city rivals Atletico, where he won the Europa League.
Titles such as “Supercup Winner” and “Club World Champion” followed – the triumph in the final of the premier class is the keeper’s greatest success to date, who has worn the jersey of Spanish record champions Real Madrid since 2018.
Courtois had previously had a Champions League final “with” Real Madrid – as Atletico’s keeper. That was in 2014 and Courtois had had to reach behind four times.
“It was my day”
Against Liverpool, Courtois had a day where his performance deserves the attribute ‘world class’. “It was just my day,” said the towering goalie after the game.
He was right, because the scoring chances from the early stages were followed by more brilliant saves. Mohammed Salah in particular is likely to dream of his great opponent the night after the final: In the 64th, 69th and 82nd minutes, the Egyptian was very close to equalizing against the Madrilenians, who were not particularly convincing in attack.
But it was just right on the defensive at Madrilenians – especially between the goal posts: Salah could not find a way past the strong national goalkeeper of Belgium.
