Chairman of Colombian Tigres FC Edgar Páez Cortés was murdered on Saturday in Bogotá after Tigres had lost 3-2 at home to Atlético FC. Páez Cortés, 63, was on his way home from the stadium with his daughter when two men on a motorcycle shot him.
– The entire Tigres family and the football community are saddened by this incident, the club’s statement says.
According to the Reuters news agency, Páez Cortés’ daughter escaped unharmed. Bogotá police are investigating the murder.
– Páez Cortés’ daughter said that he was in the co-driver’s seat. Two men on a white motorcycle fired several shots into her window, one of the investigators says El Tiempo – for the newspaper.
According to El Tiempo, men on motorcycles shot Páez Cortés four times. Two of the bullets hit him in the head, one in the chest and one in the neck.
Páez Cortés’ wife soon arrived and helped her husband to the hospital. He was still alive after receiving treatment, but died of his injuries later that evening.
President of Dimayor of the Colombian professional leagues Fernando Jaramillo expressed his condolences for the murder of Páez Cortés.
– He always stood out for his strong but respectful opinions and his love for football, says Jaramillo.
Before his presidency, Páez Cortés worked as an investigator at the Prosecutor’s Office.
Tigres plays in Colombia’s second highest league level. In the next two rounds, the memory of Páez Cortés will be honored with a minute’s silence in the Colombian Premier League and Cup matches.
