Soap with two coffee shops continues, municipality is looking for a suitable location

The soap opera surrounding the establishment of two new coffee shops in Tilburg will be continued. On Tuesday, the municipality announced that a coffee shop should be built at Paletplein 11, in a small shopping center in Tilburg-West. At least, that is the intention of the municipality. Previously, two intended locations had already been rejected.

It is not easy to get two new coffee shops in Tilburg. After a much-discussed draw, two locations were selected, both of which, it now seems, have been eliminated. The Verdiplein in Tilburg-Noord and Koningsoord, the new shopping center in Berkel-Enschot, were the locations that were drawn on June 8 last year. Verdiplein was quickly eliminated: a youth center was too close.

Protests
Because the eleven current Tilburg coffee shops are all located in the center of the city, the new ones will have to be located outside the city. But in Berkel-Enschot, local residents were on their feet when they heard that they would have a coffee shop in the area.

Ultimately, Berkel-Enschot was dropped because the municipality refused the permit. The entrepreneur had changed his application and that was not allowed. The entrepreneur who applied for the permit has started an objection procedure, which is still ongoing.

Information evening
In the meantime, the municipality is looking for an alternative location for Verdiplein and that has become Paletplein. The entrepreneur who wants to start a coffee shop on Paletplein may now apply for a permit, according to the municipality.

Mayor Theo Weterings already spoke to people in the neighborhood on Tuesday, including entrepreneurs and members of the neighborhood council. There will be an information evening for local residents on February 20.
