After a very tumultuous week, FC Volendam had to play football again tonight. With departing coach Matthias Kohler on the bench, the number seventeen of the premier league did not manage to increase the meager number of points. Volendam lost 5-0 to PEC Zwolle in its own stadium.
Kohler, who was probably on the bench for the last time, had adjusted his team in one place compared to the hopeless lost match against AZ (3-0). Garang Kuol had to give up his spot to Zach Booth. Xavier Muyamba also returned to the selection for the first time since October 21 (RKC-away). The defender started on the bench.
Flashy start
The supporters hoisted a beautiful banner before the match with the text ‘Welcome to Volendam, the most beautiful village in the Netherlands’. After exactly one minute, the home team had a huge chance when Booth was sent into the depth. However, goalkeeper Jasper Schendelaar was attentive and picked the ball from his feet. After this flashy start, Volendam kept the initiative without creating any real big opportunities.
PEC Zwolle became dangerous halfway through the first half through a difficult long-range shot by Thomas Lam that was boxed away by goalkeeper Mio Backhaus. In the 28th minute, left back George Cox ran away and passed the ball hard to Robert Mühren, who did not receive the ball properly, allowing Schendelaar to intervene.
PEC came into the match a little better in the last part before half time, but that resulted in no more than a shot from Younes Namli that missed the Volendam goal. With the score 0-0, both teams went to the warm dressing room.
In the second half it was PEC that first attacked the goal through Namli and then with Zico Buurmeester. Backhaus saved in the short corner at the expense of a corner. On the other hand, it was Bilal Ould-Chikh and Mühren again who tried in vain from distance.
Goals conceded
In the 58th minute it was scored: Odysseus Velanas escaped the attention of the Volendam defense and played the ball past Backhaus: 0-1. Less than three minutes later, substitute Ferdy Druijf made it 0-2, who again headed in three minutes after the 0-3.

Calvin Twigt escaped a red card in the 70th minute when he did ‘a Berghuisje’. He tackled Namli with both legs. Referee Dennis Higler left it at a yellow card. Just before the end, Thy poured some extra salt into the wounds. He determined the final score at 0-4 from a corner kick. In the 87th minute, Druijf ended the game by also shooting the fifth PEC goal against the ropes.
FC Volendam remains in penultimate place in the Premier League due to the defeat. Next Thursday they will visit national champion Feyenoord in De Kuip.
