Soaking wet Drenthe on Boxing Day: ‘Every drop that falls is one too many’

The consequences of the heavy rainfall are clearly visible in Drenthe. Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board has its hands full. “We are doing everything we can at the moment, but the weather gods must also be kind to us. At the moment, every drop that falls is one too many,” says spokesperson Herald van Gerner.

According to Van Gerner, the canals and ditches are completely full. “There literally cannot be another drop. We are busy pumping out the excess water at our pumping stations. However, we cannot prevent some meadows from being flooded. This also has to do with the subsoil. The water sucks sticks to some surfaces like a kind of sponge.”

For example, the lock below between Huis ter Heide and Veenhuizen is busy draining the high water from the Kolonievaart. That level is higher than normal. By opening the lock, the water flows through the lock to a lower part of the Veenhuizer Canal.
