A new year means new rules. From January 1, 2023, wearing a helmet on all scooters is a legal requirement. Also on so-called light mopeds with a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. How high the is the fine you risk if you don’t wear it? You can read that here.

Expensive joke

Are you on your way to a party and don’t want to mess up your perfectly styled haircut with the helmet? Do it anyway, because the fine you can get is a hundred euros. You can afford quite a few drinks or cans of hairspray with that! Be careful though: with a light moped you still ride on the bike path.

Approved helmet

If you ride your own scooter, you need an approved moped or motorcycle helmet. It can be recognized by a circle with a capital E in it, the central government. Behind the E is a number of an EU country. In the Netherlands that figure is 4.

Wearing a helmet is also mandatory on a shared scooter. This does apply to municipalities where there are still shared scooters, because you will no longer find them in Zoetermeer since the end of 2022.
