Gamescom 2022 is again waiting with a lot of interesting games. We have found these titles particularly exciting so far.
Gamescom 2022 will take place in Cologne – finally back on site this year. Despite the adverse circumstances, there is still a lot to see at the world’s largest games fair. While many highlights will probably only be presented at the weekend, some games have already impressed us very much.
After Gamescom, like so many other events during the Corona pandemic, only took place digitally, in 2022 many gaming fans from all over the world will finally come together in Cologne again. The huge games fair will take place from August 23rd to 28th, 2022. Around 1100 exhibitors have announced their presence in advance and hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected again.
Compared to the years before Corona, however, some big names are missing. This includes real industry giants such as Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Sony Interactive, Activision Blizzard and CD Projekt. Accordingly, the density of blockbusters at Gamescom 2022 has decreased somewhat. All the more important are the numerous indie studios, which are more strongly represented at the fair than ever before.
Traditionally, the Opening Night Live (ONL) took place on the evening of August 23, where many blockbusters are already being teased. The event was live on site but also streamed on the Internet. Since August 25, the fair has also been open to private visitors. We were particularly impressed by a few games during the ONL and the first days of the fair.
Hogwarts legacy
First the obvious, because Hogwarts Legacy belongs on every top list in gaming right now. At least there was a new trailer for the promising open-world RPG at Gamescom. The game is scheduled for release on February 10, 2023.
The action is set in the 19th century and thus many years before the well-known events from books and films. Players take on the role of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. As is typical of role-playing games, we can freely decide how our character should look and act – and last but not least, which house he should end up in.
Dune: Awakening
The cinematic trailer of this survival MMO definitely leaves you wanting more! This also confirms the persistent rumor that Funcom has a corresponding game in the making. During Gamescom 2022, the studio announced that they were working on an open-world title called “Dune: Awakening”, which was based on the books (and films).
“‘Dune: Awakening’ combines the rigors and creativity of survival games with the social interaction of large, multiplayer, multiplayer titles that last for years to create a unique and challenging open-world survival MMO. The first objective is survival before players fight for supremacy over a vast and boundless Arrakis that they share with thousands of others.
floodland
During the Gamescom 2022 Future Games Show, the Polish developer studio Vile Monarch announced its new game “Floodland”. This should appear on November 15, 2022. This is a settlement simulation in a post-apocalyptic setting.
Mankind could not stop climate change and must now build cities on an almost completely flooded planet. The trailer shown at Gamescom even provides an insight into the gameplay.
Under the Waves
In “Under the Waves” we go to the diving station. Players explore a (relaxing) exciting underwater world. Trailer and first information also indicate an exciting story that wonderfully supports the exploratory character of the game. Under the Waves is scheduled for release in 2023.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
A lot was already known about this game in advance. However, Gamescom 2022 provided new impressions with a demo. “A Plague Tale: Requiem” follows its predecessor, “Innocence”, quite seamlessly. The two siblings Amica and Hugo live in gloomy and plague-ridden France in the 14th century. After the events of Part 1, the threat is far from over and there are new locations to explore.
The demo not only shows beautiful new pictures, but also various new gameplay options. In part 2 you can develop Amica’s skills, carry new weapons and use other sophisticated mechanisms to complete the missions. Fortunately, the gloomy stealth character is not lost. The release date is October 18, 2022.
Goat simulator 3
Hardly any game causes as much excitement at Gamescom 2022 as “Goat Simulator 3”. There really isn’t that much to say about the title – the name says it all. If a trailer can speak for itself, then this one… The game is scheduled for release on November 17th.
This is just a small list of titles that we have already enjoyed at Gamescom 2022. Especially with the indie titles there are a lot of promising games. Just to name a few more: The Wandering Village, Rain World: Downpour (its predecessor was fantastic), Village Romance, Lakeside, Fall of Porcupine and Inkulinati.
Even if the big titles are comparatively underrepresented, we still want to recommend “Gotham Knights” and “God of War: Ragnarok” at this point. The first title shows the fight of some superheroes in Gotham City, known from the “Batman” series. The latter is the promising sequel to the God of War series. The successful concept of the immediate predecessor, the father-son duo consisting of Kratos and Atreus, is used again here.
And even if Sony isn’t represented with games, the company does have one DualSense Edge Wireless Controller presented at Gamescom 2022. This is a pro controller, where you can, among other things, exchange all the buttons and assign them individually.
