Snoop Dogg made his debut with his album DOGGYSTYLE in 1993 on the record label “Death Row Records”. The foundation for his rap career was laid. Now – around three decades later – the rapper can appoint himself the rightful owner of the legendary label.
Rapper Snoop Dogg, now 50, bought the label from investment firm Backstone. The announcement was made last Wednesday, February 9th. A purchase price was not revealed to the public. “It feels good to own the label I was part of when I started my career,” Snoop Dogg said, happily sharing the announcement of the purchase on Instagram.
Death Row Records pioneered hip hop and rap
When Snoop Dogg signed with the label “Death Row Records” at the age of 21, he still called himself Snoop Doggy Dogg. The label is considered a talent factory and was founded in Los Angeles in 1991 by Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, The DOC and Dick Griffey founded. In 1995, hip-hop luminary Tupac Shakur signed to the label. 2Pac released his fourth and last album ALL EYEZ ON ME there in 1996 and went down in rap history with it. He is still considered one of the most important hip-hop actors of the 90s. In September 1996 he was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas and died afterwards. The murder has not been solved to this day.
Snoop Dogg has announced his new album BODR for February 11th. Together, he will appear alongside Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar perform during the legendary halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl.
