Smoke rises in Jeddah, the F1 boss assures the race is safe

The second rehearsals on Friday were run on the street track in Jeddah. They started 15 minutes late, but nothing dramatic was seen in the workouts themselves.

All the drama had been condensed into a missile strike that had already taken place during the first exercises, hitting an oil distribution center just a mile away.

During other training sessions, F1 Series CEO Stefano Dominicali assured that the weekend program will remain unchanged. According to the Italian, the race is completely “safe”.

After that, the drivers still gathered for their own meeting, but less than an hour later Dominicali stepped out of there too, confirming that the race would indeed be run despite possible missile strikes.

Kallio said in a Viaplay broadcast that drivers are not allowed to comment on the situation in any way. It is known that the ban came from the International Automobile Federation (FIA), whose chairman Mohammed Ben Sulayem is also on site in Jeddah.

– Sports have to stand here together. We should not allow terrorism to intimidate us into changing our behavior. That’s just not allowed, Red Bull team manager Christian Horner explained to Sky Sports.

– Stefano and the President (Ben Sulayem) will take care of it. The race organizers have assured us of safety and we will be racing.

The fastest in the training itself was Ferrari Charles Leclercwhose workout ended, however, with a slight wall contact. Valtteri Bottas was behind the Mersu drivers this time, being the ninth fastest.
