Smartphone market shares: change at the top and new challengers

In terms of market share in the smartphone market, the Apple Group was still well ahead of Samsung at the start of 2022. However, the company has since lost this lead, meaning Samsung overtook the popular iPhone series by December 2022. But other manufacturers are not sleeping either. Increasing competition from China is increasingly entering the market.

Samsung continues to stand out

Global smartphone production fell by 15.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022. The companies had certainly hoped for more from the Christmas business with smartphones. There was still good news for one manufacturer in particular. After a narrow lead in smartphone sales by Samsung in 2022, this trend now appears to be continuing. According to Statista, the company’s market share of smartphones sold worldwide was 22.5 percent in the first quarter of 2023. Apple had a share of 20.5 percent during this period.

Growing success of Chinese smartphones

Chinese corporations pose challenges to many industries, including in the area of smartphones. The devices from manufacturers Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo are experiencing increasing popularity. Their smartphones impress many people not only with their features, modern design or impressive performance, but above all with their comparatively low prices.

With a market share of 12.35 percent in 2022, the manufacturer Xiaomi is the most successful of the Chinese competitors. According to Stiftung Warentest, the company’s models particularly score points for their long battery life. The devices’ cameras, however, perform less well. With a lead of almost 6 percent over the second strongest Chinese manufacturer Oppo, there is probably no reason to panic.

Oppo was able to expand its market share by around more than one percent in 2022. Even if the manufacturer is not that well-known in Germany, it is still one of the five most successful in the industry. In contrast to Xiaomi, the company often only releases the successor to the corresponding model series once a year.

Huawei is known for its high-quality and powerful smartphones, which also score points with their fair price-performance ratio. But the company has been struggling with tough restrictions for some time. Due to diplomatic differences, Google blocked support for Huawei devices. In 2022, the company’s market share fell by almost two percent to 5.25 percent.

Decline in smartphone sales

In the first quarter of 2023, the smartphone market experienced a decline for the fifth quarter in a row. Due to the current economic situation and high inflation figures, demand for smartphones is currently declining. The analysis company Canalys came to this conclusion: compared to the same quarter of the previous year, twelve percent fewer devices were delivered in the first quarter of 2023. However, there are also said to be signs that the decline in the market is increasingly easing. This is said to have led to improvements in demand for certain products and more active ordering of components by manufacturers.
