Sludge on Moerdijkvaart Gistel almost cleared up, Civil Protection comes to help
A sludge of oil and grease had been lying on the water for a few days. Closed valves could prevent the stuff from flowing through to the Plassendale-Nieuwpoort canal.
Heavier pump
Yesterday the fire brigade pumped for hours, about 20 cubic meters of grease were sucked up, but that turned out not to be enough. That is why the help of civil protection has been called in. That came to help this morning with a heavier pump.
The cleanup is not quite finished yet: at least until tomorrow there is still work to remove all the gunk.
