Slipping between railway barriers is extremely dangerous: ProRail installs speed cameras

Drive past the descending railway barriers, while the red lights of the level crossing are already flashing. That ‘joke’ will soon cost road users a lot of money. ProRail wants to install speed cameras at 40 level crossings throughout the country. Also at several level crossings in our province.

Motorists, motorcyclists and trucks who ignore the red light can be fined up to 280 euros. Moped and light moped riders can expect a fine of 190 euros. Cyclists and pedestrians who make the mistake are lucky. They cannot be flashed.

“The 40 locations have not yet been finalized,” says a ProRail spokesperson. “In the province of Brabant, if all municipalities want to cooperate, we hope to install speed cameras at level crossings in Boxtel, Oisterwijk, Rosmalen, Rijen and Vught.”

“The cameras make people change their behavior.”

Issuing fines is not the goal, explains regional director at ProRail Harro Homan: “Ignoring the railway installation leads to life-threatening situations. We know that speed cameras work: in an earlier trial in Hilversum, the number of violations decreased by 50 percent after six months. That’s what we do it for. The cameras cause people to change their behavior. This makes the rail and road safer.”

Special cameras are required for the level crossings, which have recently been tested in Hilversum and Bunnik. It is not yet known when the first speed camera will work in North Brabant.
