Slightly fewer tourists in Drenthe, but considerably more ‘foreign stays’

Fewer tourists spent the night in Drenthe last year than the year before. This is evident from figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). The decrease in Drenthe was 1.2 percent compared to 2022.

The total number of guests also decreased in North Brabant and Friesland, by 1.8 and 7.4 percent respectively.

In total, more than 2 million people stayed in a Drenthe hotel, campsite or holiday park last year. The number of Dutch guests fell by more than 6 percent to 1.7 million. The number of foreigners actually increased: more than 32 percent compared to a year earlier.

According to Statistics Netherlands, never before have so many guests stayed in the Netherlands as last year. This concerns 49.7 million people, 8 percent more than a year earlier. The peak of visiting foreigners (+25 percent) plays an especially important role. The number of Dutch guests remained approximately the same.

People from abroad who spend the night in the Netherlands mainly come from Germany (7.2 million). This is followed by Belgium (2.5 million), North and South America (2.1 million) and the United Kingdom (2.0 million). It is not known whether this ratio is the same in Drenthe.

With 32.6 million, hotels received the most guests of all accommodation accommodations in 2023. There has also been a slight increase at camping and cottage sites.
