Slaughterhouse in Torhout must not close: “Problems have been addressed”
Animal rights groups filed a complaint against the slaughterhouse after undercover footage showed that the stunning just before the slaughter was not done properly or not. An inspection in mid-June last year still showed some shortcomings in that area, but six months later they had been resolved.
Problem with transport or earlier
“The comments of the inspection services during a check on February 28 were as follows: attention should be paid to the interval between stunning and throating, because it is rather long. According to the inspector, there were no signs that pigs were slaughtered consciously Weyts said in the committee.
Veterinarians who regularly check the procedures in the slaughterhouse also indicate that most problems occur during transport or even earlier. “The problems identified in the past in the slaughterhouse have been addressed and there is a clear improvement. So I don’t think a closure is an issue. And I can say that the investment in controls in slaughterhouses, and therefore also in Torhout, paying off,” Weyts added.
